My grandmother was a young dancer in the royal palace, but the horrific Khmer Rouge genocide destroyed all forms of art, education, and spiritual traditions in Cambodia. The woman went through the unspeakable pain of losing a family killed in front of her eyes. She herself miraculously escaped with a small daughter in her arms.
Later, her daughter grew up, married a farmer, and had children of her own, but they never managed to understand the inhuman pain that continued to haunt her grandmother. My grandmother didn't talk about those events... and, in fact, she almost never spoke at all. She is in a daze day after day, unable to feel any emotions. From a very young age, the granddaughter, young Manin, was deeply worried about her grandmother's condition.
One day, after visiting a Buddhist temple, Manin meets a mystical sign that calls her to the temple of the ancient dancing Goddesses Apsaras. Manin follows the sign and a miracle happens. The Stone Apsara tells the girl that she has been watching Manin for many years, and can read her heart and see the purity of her soul. Apsara decides to come out of the stone to pass on the legacy of her Mystical Dance to the girl. The grandmother witnesses the transfer of the Sacred Dance to her granddaughter. At this point, clarity and memory return to her. Grandma, with Manin's help, decides to teach the village children to dance. Opens a village Sacred Dance school, reviving ancient traditions and values.
Apsaras are dancing celestial beings etched in stone on Cambodian temples. Legends say that they are intermediaries between our reality and the spiritual realm and can teach people various arts.
